This is Us: Autism and SEN/D-friendly workshop

‘This Is Us’ is a workshop designed for neurodiverse pupils at all levels of ability. Participants will have the opportunity to make their own unique contribution to a giant cartoon picture that can be taken away for display at school. During the session, pupils have the opportunity to explore the main gallery and search for four cartoons on display. Then, using a template, they will draw cartoon versions of themselves with a speech bubble. These will be cut out and stuck to a large colourful background that will finish up depicting the group in their own ‘cartoon world’.

The workshop lasts up to two hours, including time spent in the gallery and time for a mid-way break for snacks, etc. It is available on Mondays, when the museum is closed to the public, ensuring a peaceful experience. The workshop has been designed to be most suitable for pupils in Year 3 and above. Visual schedules and adapted resources will be used to enhance the predictability and understanding of the session, and you will be sent ‘social stories’ to support your trip in advance.

‘This Is Us’ is available free to schools and groups catering for children with autism and SEN/D in these London boroughs thanks to support from John Lyon’s Charity: Barnet, Brent, Camden, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Harrow, Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster, City of London. For schools and groups outside these boroughs there is a fee of £50.00. The workshop has been designed in collaboration with an autism specialist.
